How to make a small batch of jam in 30 minuites
- 200g of fresh fruit
- 200g of sugar
- 1 tsp of lemon juice or citric acid
What you will need:
- A chilled plate
- Non-stick pan
- Wooden sppon
- A sterilised storage jar

- Heat up your fruit in a pan on a medium heat, stir continously with a wooden spoon until the fruit becomes soft.
- Once fruit has started to soften, add your sugar and keep stirring until the sugar has melted and combined with the fruit
- Turn up the heat and allow the mixture to boil for around 5 minutes, stirring occasionally
- Test the jam by dropping a little amount onto your chilled plate, place in the fridge for 30 seconds. Run your finger through the jam, if it stays and creates a ripple it is ready. It should have a ‘jam’ like texture -easy as that!
- Pour the warm jam into a sterilised jar and screw the lid on whilst hot, set on the side to cool down to room temperature, then place in the fridge until set.
- The jam can be used right away alghtough it is best left to cool for the tastiest results.
Where can I find cheap fruit to make jam with?
The best place to find cheap fruit is in the bargain bucket at your local fruit store! If you can’t see one, ask a staff member if they have any reduced fruit that is close to it’s sell by date. This fruit is the best to make jam with, not only is it cheaper, but older fruit tends to be sweeter. You are also about to boil the life out of the fruit and cover it in sugar, so presentation of the ingridients is not essential.
What fruit should I use for jam?
You can use any fruit really! But, for a traditional jam you should use berries such as raspberries, strawberries or blackberries. Our favourite combination at The Backyard Farmer has to be raspberry & blackberry jam.
