Greenhouse plants generally grow best when they receive plenty of useful natural light. In most gardens, the biggest gains come from choosing a sensible position, keeping the glazing clean, arranging plants carefully and adjusting ventilation or shading as the seasons change. Whether you are planning a new greenhouse or trying to brighten an existing one, a few practical changes can make a noticeable difference. Aim for at least one thorough clean each year. Autumn is a particularly useful time because it removes summer grime before the darker months arrive. Greenhouses near trees or dusty roads may need additional cleaning during the growing season.

Stop the Greenhouse Shading Itself

Once light has entered the greenhouse, make sure it can reach as many plants as possible. Poorly positioned shelving, hanging baskets and crowded containers can create unnecessary shade. Arrange plants so taller crops do not permanently block shorter ones, while leaving enough space for air to circulate.

Train vigorous crops such as tomatoes and cucumbers vertically using canes, strings or suitable supports. This keeps their growth organised and prevents sprawling stems from covering neighbouring plants. More sunlight also means more heat. On bright days, a greenhouse can become excessively hot even when the outside temperature feels comfortable. High temperatures can cause wilting, flower drop, poor pollination and stress, particularly when ventilation is limited.

Open roof vents, side or louvre vents and the greenhouse door on hot days. Roof vents are especially useful because hot air rises and can escape from the highest point.

If ventilation alone is not enough, use temporary shade netting, blinds or another suitable shading product. Spring: Clean the glazing if required and increase ventilation as brighter days become warmer. Check that winter storage, fleece or other materials are not blocking the glass.

Summer: Keep vents open when conditions allow and use temporary shading only during periods of excessive heat. Train crops regularly so they do not create dense, unmanaged shade.
