Why does a cordless lawn mower battery run out of charge quickly?
Most people’s first mistake when using a battery powered lawn mower is to try to cut the grass on the shortest setting first.
An electric motor is less powerful than a petrol mower and might cut out if the load is too much, also the harder the motor works, the quicker the batteries drain.
If you cut long grass on the shortest setting, the load on the batteries is very high and will likely drain the batteries too fast. There might even be too much resistance from the long grass, which will cause the motor to cut out.
How to cut long grass with a cordless lawn mower
If you want to avoid the batteries draining too quickly when cutting long grass with a cordless lawn mower, there are two things you can do.
For long wet grass check out my article – Can you cut long wet grass?
Mow the grass on the highest setting.
If the grass is 15cm to 20cm, you can take the load off the motor and batteries by mowing the lawn in the highest setting. For most cordless lawnmowers, the highest cut is usually around 6cm to 8cm.
Re-mowing the lawn on a lower setting to achieve your desired finish.
Strim very long grass (knee height and above)
If the grass is taller than 20cm, you can use a strimmer to reduce the height. Then, follow this up by mowing the lawn on the highest setting.
You can then mow the lawn to the height you require without draining the batteries too quickly.
Keep on top of the lawn.
The story’s moral is that the less load on the motor, the longer the batteries will last in your cordless lawn mower. You can ensure the batteries last their specified length by mowing your lawn once a week.
Watch out for lumps and bumps.
If the area you are mowing is not very level, be aware of any bumps in the ground. Mowing over these lumps and bumps can drain the battery.
