Leafy vegetables, selected brassicas and quick roots are usually the most dependable vegetables for shade in the UK. Peas, beans, leeks and potatoes may also remain worthwhile, but generally need the brighter parts of a partially shaded plot.

Leafy Vegetables and Salads

Leaf crops are the safest group because the leaves themselves are harvested. They do not need to flower, ripen fruit or form a large storage root before becoming useful.

Chard and perpetual spinach are among the strongest choices, providing repeated pickings over a long period. Kale is similarly adaptable and can remain productive into autumn and winter.

Spinach, loose-leaf lettuce, rocket, mizuna and pak choi are also worthwhile where beds receive several hours of direct or bright filtered light. Afternoon shade may help keep them cooler during summer, although they still need adequate overall light.

None of these are true deep-shade vegetables. Growth becomes thinner and slower as light declines, while damp, sheltered beds may suffer greater slug and snail damage.

Brassicas

Kale and kohlrabi are the safest brassicas for partial shade. Kale can be harvested before the plant reaches full size, while kohlrabi can be picked young if its swollen stem develops slowly.

Cabbage, purple sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts are more demanding. They may still produce where they receive reasonable direct light, but can establish slowly, remain smaller and take longer to mature. Give these larger brassicas the brighter part of a shaded section rather than the darkest bed.

Brassicas generally tolerate reduced light better than tomatoes or courgettes, but tolerance is not the same as preference.

Root Crops

Radishes and beetroot are the most dependable roots for partial shade. Radishes mature quickly, while beetroot can be harvested young if the roots remain smaller than expected. Beetroot leaves are also edible when picked in moderation.

Baby carrots, young turnips and spring onions are worth trying. They are more realistic choices than large maincrop carrots, parsnips or storage onions because they do not need to reach maximum size before becoming useful.

Peas, Beans and Potatoes

Broad beans are the strongest option in this group, particularly when autumn-sown or planted early enough to grow before nearby deciduous trees come fully into leaf.

Peas may crop in brighter partial shade, although pod numbers can fall as light decreases. Runner beans are less dependable but may succeed where their upper growth can reach open sunlight above a fence or surrounding vegetation.

Potatoes often produce a usable harvest in partial shade, but yields and tuber size may be lower. Early varieties are usually the most practical choice because they mature sooner and occupy the ground for less time.

These crops are worth testing, but they should not be treated as the most reliable vegetables for heavily shaded beds.


My Mixed-Light Allotment

My allotment sits on the edge of a National Trust park, with several large mature trees beyond the boundary. It is roughly south-facing and receives around six to eight hours or more of direct sunlight during the main growing season before the sun drops behind the trees later in the day.

This makes it a productive mixed-light plot rather than a permanently shady allotment. Most beds receive enough sun for normal vegetable growing, although those closest to the boundary lose direct light earlier.

A channel approximately two feet deep runs around the plots and may have reduced some root encroachment from the neighbouring trees. I do not assume it stops roots completely, so I still monitor soil moisture, crop performance and any woody roots found during cultivation.


How Much Shade Does Your Allotment Actually Get?

Calling a plot “shady” is too vague to guide crop selection. One bed may receive strong morning and midday sun before losing the light, while another remains behind a shed or beneath a tree canopy for most of the day. The duration, timing and cause of the shade all matter.

Map the Sun Through the Day

Visit the plot, or photograph it from the same position, at roughly:

  1. 9am
  2. Midday
  3. 3pm
  4. 6pm

For each bed, note:

  • When direct sunlight arrives and disappears
  • Whether the light is direct or dappled
  • What creates the shade
  • Which areas remain bright for longest

Repeat the check once nearby deciduous trees are fully in leaf. A winter inspection can be misleading: bare branches let more light through, but the lower sun also casts longer shadows. Summer conditions may look very different.

Check the soil as well. Building shade may leave beds cooler and damper, while mature trees can create dry shade by competing for water.

Afternoon shade is closest to the conditions on my own allotment, where mature trees block the sun later in the day. The plot still receives strong light earlier, making it very different from ground beneath permanent tree cover.


Why Leafy Crops and Quick Roots Cope Better

Many traditional allotment crops tolerate partial shade better than heat-loving fruiting vegetables, although they still grow best with good light. The difference is mainly in what part of the plant is harvested.

Leafy vegetables, brassicas, leeks, young roots and potatoes can still provide a useful crop when reduced light slows their growth. Leaves can be harvested before the plant reaches full size, while radishes, beetroot and baby carrots remain usable even if the roots develop more slowly. Autumn-sown and early crops may also make progress before nearby deciduous trees fully leaf out.

Soft fruit and perennial crops can make better long-term use of a shaded allotment boundary than annual fruiting vegetables.

Currants and gooseberries are among the strongest choices where the ground still receives several hours of direct or bright filtered light. Blackcurrants are particularly suited to cooler conditions, while redcurrants and whitecurrants benefit from the brightest available position.

Raspberries can also remain productive, but avoid permanent deep shade and allow space around the canes. Rhubarb is useful for a lightly shaded corner, although established crowns become less vigorous as light declines.

Alpine strawberries tolerate partial shade better than conventional strawberries, but produce smaller fruit. A Morello cherry may suit a partly shaded wall or boundary, although it requires more space and represents a longer-term commitment.

Some can still crop where strong morning and midday sun is followed by later shade. That does not make them shade-tolerant. A tomato plant receiving direct sunlight until mid-afternoon is in a very different position from one receiving only scattered light beneath a tree canopy.

Tomatoes, peppers, chillies and aubergines may struggle to ripen in poor light. Sweetcorn needs strong growth to fill its cobs, while courgettes, pumpkins and squash may produce plenty of foliage but fewer fruits. Cucumbers and melons are also unlikely to justify space in heavily shaded beds.

Keep these crops away from large trees and tall hedges where possible. Position climbing supports, sweetcorn blocks and other tall plants carefully so they do not cast additional shade over lower-growing crops.


Growing Beside Large Trees

Shade Is Only Part of the Problem

Large trees can affect an allotment through more than reduced sunlight. Their roots may also compete with crops for water and nutrients, causing shaded boundary beds to dry surprisingly quickly.

Poor growth near trees should not automatically be blamed on shade alone.

Look for a pattern rather than relying on one symptom:

  • Fine woody roots repeatedly appearing during cultivation

  • Crops improving farther away from the trees
  • Watering providing only short-lived relief

These signs do not prove that tree roots are responsible, but several occurring together make root competition more likely.

Do not make permanent decisions after a single visit. Light, soil moisture and tree cover change through spring, summer and autumn, so use the first growing season to test the plot.

  1. Map the light and moisture: Record where direct sun falls, which beds stay damp and which dry quickly near trees.
  2. Reserve the brightest ground: Use it for tomatoes, courgettes, sweetcorn and other fruiting crops.
  3. Plant a small trial range: Good choices include chard, kale, lettuce, beetroot, radishes, broad beans and potatoes. Add only one or two soft-fruit plants initially.
  4. Compare different positions: Where space allows, grow the same crop in a brighter and shadier bed.
  5. Keep simple records: Note planting dates, time to harvest, crop size, approximate yield, watering needs, slug damage and whether plants lean towards the light.
  6. Delay permanent investment: Avoid immediately filling the boundary with fruit bushes or installing expensive raised beds and fruit cages.

By the end of the first year, you should know whether reduced light, dry soil or tree-root competition is the main restriction. You can then keep the productive beds for vegetables and use the most difficult areas for permanent fruit, composting, water storage or wildlife.
